  • BASIC I.D. in Multimodel Therapy (多重模型疗法的基本关注点)

    2007-4-27

    Multimodal therapy is a systematic and comprehensive psychotherapeutic approach developed by Arnold Lazarus, a clinical psychologist. While respecting the assumption that clinical practice should adhere firmly to the principles, procedures, and findings of psychology as an experimental science, the multimodal orientation transcends the behavīoral tradition by adding unique assessment procedures and by dealing in great depth and detail with sensory, imagery, cognitive, and interpersonal factors and their interactive effects. A basic premise is that patients are usually troubled by a multitude of specific problems that should be dealt with by a broad range of specific methods. A multimodal assessment examines each area of a person’s BASIC I.D.:

    B = behavīor

    A = Affect

    S = Sensation

    I = Imagery

    C = Cognition

    I = Interpersonal relationships

    D = Drugs/Biology

    It provides an operational way of answering the questions, What works? For whom? Under which conditions?

    Basic Concepts

    Most of our experiences comprise moving, feeling, sensing, imagining, thinking, and relating to one another. In the final analysis, we are biochemical-neurophysiological entities. Human life and conduct are products of ongoing behaviors, affective processes, sensations, images, cognitions, interpersonal relationships, and biological functions. BASIC I.B. is derived from the first letters of each of these modalities, but by referring to the biological modality as “Drugs/Biology” (because one of the most common biological interventions is the use of psychotropic medication), we have the acronym BASIC I.D. It is crucial to remember that D stands not only for drugs, medication, or pharmacological intervention, but also includes nutrition, hygiene, exercise, and all basic physiological and pathological inputs. (See C. N. Lazarus, 1998.)

    The BASIC I.D. is presumed to comprise human temperament and personality, and it is assumed that everything from anger, disappointment, disgust, greed, fear, grief, awe, contempt, and boredom to love, hope, faith, ecstasy, optimism, and joy can be explained by examining components and interactions within a person’s BASIC I.D. It is also essential to recognize and include factors that fall outside the BASIC I.D., such as sociocultural, political, and other macroenvironmental events. While external realities are not part of temperament and personality, it has frequently been noted that psychopathology and society are inextricably bound together. There are obviously crucial differences in adaptive interpersonal styles between people raised and living in New York and New Guinea, but regardless of an individual’s background, detailed descrīptions of salient behavīors, affective responses, sensory reactions, images, cognitions, interpersonal dealings, and biological propensities will provide the principal ingredients of a person’s psychological makeup. To appreciate further the interactions among the various modalities—for example, how certain behavīors influence and are influenced by affects, sensations, images, cognitions, and significant relationships—is to know a great deal about individuals and their social networks.

  • 讨个大明星回家 (Marry with a Superstar )

    2007-4-25

    A female colleague sent me a little story that I found quite interesting.  I imagine it could be changed and transformed into a Zen parable.

    The Seamstress - A Parable

        One day, when a seamstress was sewing while sitting close to a river,her thimble fell into the river. When she cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, "My dear child, why are you crying?"

        The seamstress replied that her thimble had fallen into the water and that she needed it to help her husband in making a living for their family.

        The Lord dipped His hand into the water and pulled up a golden thimble set with pearls.

        "Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked

        The seamstress replied, "No."

         The Lord again dipped into the river. He held out a silver thimble ringed with sapphires.

        "Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked.

        Again, the seamstress replied, "No."

        The Lord reached down again and came up with a leather thimble. "Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked.

        The seamstress replied, "Yes."

        The Lord was pleased with the woman's honesty and gave her all three thimbles to keep, and the seamstress went home happy.

        Some years later, the seamstress was walking with her husband along the riverbank, and her husband fell into the river and disappeared under the water.

        When she cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked her, "Why are you crying?"

        "Oh Lord, my husband has fallen into the river!"
    The Lord went down into the water and came up with George Clooney.

        "Is this your husband?" the Lord asked.

        "Yes!" cried the seamstress.

        The Lord was furious. "You lied! That is an untruth!"

        The seamstress replied, "Oh, forgive me, my Lord It is a misunderstanding.

        If I had said 'no' to George Clooney, you would have come up  with Brad Pitt. Then if I said 'no' to him, you would have come up with my husband. Had I then said 'yes,' you would have given me all three. Lord, I'm not in the best of health and would not be able to take care of all three husbands, so THAT'S why I said 'yes' to  George Clooney.

        And so the Lord let her keep him.

        The moral of this story is: Whenever a woman lies, it's for a good and honorable reason, and in the best interest of others.

        That's our story, and we're sticking to it.

        Signed,
        All Us Women

(A Pot with a Crack )

    2007-4-25

    My niece who lives in California sent me this.  I had not seen it before.

    An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of   a   pole, which she carried across her neck.

    One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water, at the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

    For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

    After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."

    The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?"  "That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."

    Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

    SO, to all of my crackpot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path!
