Classic Street of Beijing—Hutong

2007-09-07 10:52:01

Hutong is a kind of special lane or alley only Beijing city has. Beijing’s Hutong formed in Yuan dynasty, 13AD, and have been several hundred years in China.

Now there are thousands of Hutongs in Beijing which are around the Forbidden City. Most Hutongs lie east to west and no more than 9 meters wide, and they are always compound with Siheyuan (a compound with houses around a courtyard). These Hutongs link with these Siheyuan where old Beijing residents live, witnessing the vicissitude of the city.

Although so many Hutongs seem to be the same superficially, each one has its characteristics. Some of them are named by someone’s name because he or she has ever lived there; some of them are named by its shape; and most of them do not have their names but they have countless its own historical stories that cannot be forgotten and changed.

The residents of Beijing city have special feelings to their Hutongs, because they not only are the places where people live but also are the museums of customs and social life.
